Biography
Lachlan Radford is a member of the BBC Concert Orchestra double bass section and teacher of double bass. He completed his Bachelor of Music with first class honours in performance at Auckland University. In 2010 he moved to London with the help of the NZUK Link Elman Poole Fellowship to work with Smith Square Sinfonia and was based in London until 2018 during which he taught as Professor of Double Bass at the Junior Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Lachlan’s enthusiasm for passing on his musical experience to a younger generation is helped by his diverse and genre-defying background. In 2019 he moved back to New Zealand and is the co-founder of Aotearoa Music Education Trust and the co-founder of Piccolo Bass project.
Lachlan held the subprincipal double bass role with Orchestra Wellington from 2021-22 before moving to work with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in 2023. In 2024 he returned to London to work with the BBC Concert Orchestra - the resident orchestra of the world's longest running live music radio programme. He has worked with many world-class orchestras including the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra, The Philharmonia and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Outside of the classical world Lachlan can be found working in other genres, most often with his trio More Like Trees who blend a fusion of flamenco and drum’n’bass on acoustic instruments. Their second album was released in 2020. He has also performed and recorded with award-winning artists such as Heritage Orchestra, DJ Yoda, Reeps One, Lazy Habits, and MC Tali.
